As a basketball player I remember going into the locker room before a big game against a rival who chose us to be the team they play against for homecoming. Generally, they pick the worst team because they want a definite victory and it is a slap in the face to a team who are chosen for this type of event. We were in the locker room and our coach told us that it was their homecoming. He gave a fairly short speech, telling us that they thought we were bad, we needed to upset them that night. I remember walking out of that locker room angry and ready to play the best game of my life. This is the type of motivational speech that a coach wants to give and it works! It tugged at my emotions in a way that put me in a mood to achieve what the motivational speaker wanted, in this case my coach. He wanted to prepare us to play a bloody and tough game of basketball that evening. We did win that evening, in case you are wondering.
The goal of any good motivational speech is to tug at your audiences emotions. It is done on almost any commercial as well. I would encourage you to sit back and just watch a few of them abstractly and see how their goal (usually to purchase something) is being shown throughout their commercial either through encouraging you to have a good time, an attractive lady on a lot of commercials, etc.
Hunger Games
Another good example is the "Feed the Children" organization commercials. There is a reason why they never show the children outside playing and smiling having a good time. Their goal is to tug at your emotions to make them feel sorry for them. In which I'm not try to downplay the fact that we have millions of people dying each year around the world due to hunger. However, they purposely give you the saddest eyes possible, no smiling, disease ridden children to get you to call in and start donating to their cause.
Axe body spray takes a totally different approach. It is almost silly, but they always have some average looking guy put on some Axe body spray and in return he gets the most attractive girl. Their goal is to get you to consider the idea that maybe if you smelt good that an attractive girl would be interested in you. It works for them too. It seems that the product sells well and they have really pushed the idea that smelling good can improve your dating life. That's probably just a fact though. If you smell bad, you probably would have a pretty bad dating life.
Good Motivational Speeches Tug at Your Emotions
Anyhow, regardless of what type of motivational speech you want to give, you really have to think what you are trying to accomplish. What angle can you take that would tug at the emotions of your audience to get them to react in the way you want them to. Like a coach, you may want to make them angry. Like axe body spray, you may just want them to laugh a little bit, but place something in the back of their mind to make them think. Like the Feed the Children commercials, you may have to really compel them and put them in tears so that they will react.
